Types of Laser Levels
1) Plumb and Dot Lasers are laser levels that create reference dots when pointed at a surface. They are designed to provide you with a reference point to compare and ensure the surface remains level.
2) Laser Line Generators or Line Level Lasers. These types of lasers emit a laser line which is level with the surface. Generally, laser line levels emit a line in a single direction. They are usually used indoors and generally small and hand held. Or they can be mounted on level surfaces such as desks or step ladders which leaves the the user's hands free to do other work.
3) Rotary Laser Levels. These produce a rotating laser line in order to show a laser beam that circles the complete area that is being surveyed instead of being directed only at a small area. These types of laser levels are large and very cumbersome. They require a tripod stand which generally comes with them. They are set up in the middle of the area being checked.
Automatic or Self Leveling Lasers
The different types described above emit their laser beams in different ways but you can also choose an instrument which self, or automatically levels. Many surveyors choose these types of lasers to make their work more efficient and to save time. These types, if knocked or jarred by accident will automatically reset to the proper level saving time otherwise used for manual adjustment. The operator can work at some distance from the instrument so it is ideal for working alone.
