Vertical bandsaws, are very safe tools to use, but you must always be aware that all tools in the wrong hands are potentially dangerous.
Firstly always work with protective eye coverings like glasses or goggles. The blade on a vertical band saw rotates at very high speeds and even the smallest piece of waste or debris will be traveling at high velocity and they are thrown out in all directions. It is just as important to protect your eyes during a small quick job as it is a larger piece of work. Remember damage to your eyesight could be with you for life.
Worse still, the carbon steel blade can break and then you will have shards of metal flying around. Do not ever risk eye damage, make it a habit to always were your protective eye wear. Normal prescription glasses offer no protection at all.
Wear appropriate clothing while using your vertical band saw. This rule applies when you are using any machine tool, whether they are for woodworking, metalworking or hedge trimming. Do not wear loose hanging clothes, or anything that can potentially get caught up in the machine. Use common sense, no long jewellery, flowing scarves or neck ties.
Make sure you check your vertical band saw before using it. A band saw has many wheels, blocks and guides that must be correctly positioned for the job that you are undertaking. They need to be checked regularly for signs of wear and tear and replace when required. When in doubt give your supplier a call, or check out their online customer service section if you can't find the manual.
Respect your machinery and it will perform well for you for years.
Be safe not sorry when using your vertical band saw.
